Multiple Sclerosis Stem Cell Transplant

At Harley Street at University College Hospital we have been providing dedicated haematology services, including stem cell transplant for many years. We have developed a comprehensive service offering the latest transplant techniques and our facility holds JACIE accreditation.

Our team of Consultant experts are now offering Autologous Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (AHSCT) for Multiple Sclerosis (MS). This is the first private service of its kind in the UK and follows the EMBMT BSBMT  guidance for this treatment option. This pioneering treatment aims to induce long term remission of MS.

MS is the most common non-traumatic neurological disability in young adults. Whilst the cause of MS remains unknown it is widely accepted as an autoimmune condition that affects the brain and spinal cord, which causes problems with balance, vision and muscle movement. There is currently no cure for MS, but there are treatments available to help with symptoms.

Autologous Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (using a patient’s own cells) is a new treatment option for MS, that is used to modify the immune system. This treatment is not suitable for all MS patients and is currently only used to treat relapsing remitting MS against a clinical criteria.

Published studies using this treatment modality for relapsing remitting MS are showing very promising results in inducing long term remission of the disease.

Our multidisciplinary team includes expert Neurologists who have a special interest in the treatment of MS, particularly this new treatment option and highly experienced expert Haematologists who specialise in stem cell transplant.
